UCL Connect - Artificial Intelligence Forum

On the afternoon of June 29, 2019, UCL Connect, a global series of programmes initiated by University College London, hosted its second small-scale forum on artificial intelligence in Beijing at NIO House (Oriental Plaza). The event invited four speakers from different industries and attracted alumni from all walks of life.

Our first guest speaker was Dr. Ma Zhaoyuan, the chief investigator in Future Laboratory of Tsinghua University. His speech titled "Rational Pursuit beyond AI" used foundational scientific understanding to analyze the underlying logic of AI algorithm to ignite the minds of audience.

The next speaker, Dr. Zhang Ni, who graduated from UCL E&E Engineering with a doctorate degree,   introduced the development status and future research direction of artificial intelligence technology in the field of finance and healthcare. It is predicted that with the support of artificial intelligence, financial fraud and disease prevention can be detected at early stage.

Our third speaker introduced Didi which is a car app widely used in China. Dr. Wu Guobin, Director of DiDi Research Outreach, introduced DiDi’s artificial intelligence that provides a convenient and safer travel service for passengers.

Our last speaker is an alumnus of UCL. Mr. Su Fang has obtained a master's degree in management from UCL. Mr. Su Fang is the GM of China Investments at Singtel Innov8 Ventures, the largest corporate capital venture fund in South East Asia. From the perspective of investors, he explained the development status of artificial intelligence industry and the role of various artificial intelligence companies in the industry.

At the interactive panel session, the alumni asked questions and discussed the development potential of artificial intelligence in healthcare, education, finance and other sectors. Artificial intelligence is the icon of the fourth industrial revolution and will significantly impact people's choice of education and career direction. How should we prepare for the era of artificial intelligence?

Towards the end of the event our sponsor the NIO Group gave a tour of the NIO House. 51Give, a non-profit organization, that collaborated on a few UCL alumni charitable activities introduced the recent launch of a charity project called "Protect the Ocean · Clean the Beach".

Many thanks to all the alumni, guests, sponsors and the staff of UCL and UCL Club of Beijing. See you next time!
